Did you know that July is national ice cream month? And in honor of the national celebration (and everyone’s favorite summer treat), Atlanta hosts an ice cream festival each July. This year the Atlanta Ice Cream Festival will take place on Saturday, July 28th in Piedmont Park from 10:30 am – 6:30 pm. In addition to an array of ice cream selections, the festival will feature games and activities and health and nutrition education. And of course, no ice cream festival would be complete without a traditional ice cream eating contest!
But don’t worry if you’re not able to make it out to Piedmont Park this year for the festival – Atlanta has plenty of delicious ice cream shops to choose from this summer. Here are a few of my top recommendations.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream: Though originating in Ohio, Jeni’s is quickly becoming an Atlanta ice cream staple. Best of all, there are four locations in the metro area – Westside Provisions, Decatur Square, Krog Street Market, and Avalon.
Morelli’s Gourmet Ice Cream: For almost 10 years, Morelli’s has been serving some of the best ice cream not only in the city – but country. The original shop is located off Moreland Avenue, with additional shops in Dunwoody (inside Farm Burger) and Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.
8 Degrees Fahrenheit Ice Cream: Thai-rolled ice cream is the newest ice cream craze – and watching it get made is half the fun The most popular location is located off of Buford Highway in Doraville, but there are also locations in Cumming and Duluth!
Frosty Caboose: This charming shop serves its tasty treats out of a vintage red caboose. Situated next to the railroad tracks in downtown Chamblee, this is a favorite spot for kids!
Butter & Cream Ice Cream: With all ingredients made on site, Butter & Cream Ice Cream gives true meaning to hometown ice cream. Their small-batch ice cream can be found in Decatur, Roswell, and The Beltline.
Queen of Cream: Located in the Old Fourth Ward district of Atlanta, Queen of Cream’s ice cream is made 100% from scratch!
Honeysuckle Gelato: And for creamy gelato with a Southern twist, make a stop at Honeysuckle Gelato the next time you’re in Ponce City Market.
